Arnold Group at the University of Wisconsin Milwaukee-Members: Professor Alexander (Leggy) Arnold

Prof. (Leggy) Alexander Arnold [arnold2@uwm.edu]
I enjoy the daily multi-tasking as a professor, which includes the supervision of research, teaching, and the many other little things that brighten my day at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee. My passion is the discovery of new biological active compounds and the identification of their mode of action. The interplay between small molecules and proteins is complicated and a fascinating world of possibilities.

Alexander Vincent [bvincent@uwm.edu]
I completed my bachelor’s degree in science in Biomedical Sciences at Marquette University. I developed a sincere passion for organic chemistry and pharmacology through my studies, which after a few years in the industrial sector as an analytical chemist, left me wanting to further develop my career in chemistry. I decided to pursue the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee due to its outstanding reputation in drug discovery and development.  I was attracted to the Arnold Group due to the extremely innovative research on various potential drug candidates, as well as novel organic synthetic techniques.  After completing my Ph.D., I aim to apply my repertoire of chemical and professional skills gained from my education at UWM and apply them in drug discovery and the medicinal chemistry sector.

Ethan Kowalczyk [kowalc25@uwm.edu]
I completed my bachelor’s degree in Chemistry at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point.  My time there left me hungry for more, so I went on to pursue the Ph.D. Chemistry program at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.  I am mainly focusing on organic synthesis with a minor focus on analytical techniques.  What brought me to the Arnold Group was the heavy focus on interdisciplinary research, and the connections Dr. Arnold has with the school and companies within the community.  After my Ph.D., I plan on taking the skills I learned and applying them towards industry to make the world better.

Michelle Jean Meyer [meyer354@uwm.edu]
I have recently completed my Bachelor of Science degrees in biochemistry and psychology with a minor in biology at UWM. This combination of studies helped me create a dimensional understanding of biological systems and neuroscience. I started working in the Arnold Group in my last year of undergrad. During that time, I had cultivated an interest in medicinal research. With this interest, I had decided to pursue my Ph.D. in chemistry at UWM. I chose to work with the Arnold Group because of the great connections I have made and for my ability to conduct interdisciplinary research. I look forward to building a career in drug discovery with the help of my research group and school.

Kayode Medubi [kmmedubi@uwm.edu]
I received my bachelor’s and master’s degree in Chemistry from the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, I worked on drug metal complexes to increase drug potency and to overcome antimicrobial resistance. I decided to continue my journey in the research at University of Wisconsin Milwaukee, where I enjoy the work in the Arnold group. My group focuses on drug discovery and development, and I hope to master the diverse analytical methods affiliated with this research. After my graduation, I am interested to work in the pharmaceutical industry.

Maya Fernando [ferna239@uwm.edu]
I completed my undergraduate degree in Biochemistry at Winona State University. During my time there I worked on a project studying metabolites of some tricyclic antidepressants. I enjoyed my time working in the lab and decided I wanted to pursue a Ph.D. in chemistry. I have always been interested in organic chemistry and drug development and the Arnold group felt like a great fit to conduct exciting research and develop new skills. After completing my Ph.D., I hope to work as an organic chemist in industry.

Mubaraq Toriola [mtoriola@uwm.edu]
Having completed a bachelor’s and master's degree in biochemistry, I decided to pursue my research interest in drug discovery and medicinal chemistry at the University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee (PhD. Chemistry). I joined Arnold's group not only because it fit best with my research interests but also my personality and long-term goals. I find the interdisciplinary nature of the research carried out in Arnold Lab in the areas of drug discovery and development in perfect alignment with my academic goals, affording me the opportunity to acquire a diverse set of skills while contributing to impactful research initiatives. On completion of my program, I look forward to a successful career in the pharmaceutical industry.

Michael Owens [owens46@uwm.edu]
I completed a Bachelor's degree in General Studies at the University of North Dakota in 2021 and transferred into the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in 2023 to finish a Bachelor's in Biochemistry that I had begun in North Dakota.  Experiences at both schools have inspired me to pursue a path in chemistry and pharmaceuticals.  Joining the Arnold Group has provided some excellent opportunities and insights into the academic and research areas of medicine and drug development.  After graduation I hope to move on to pharmacy school to obtain a Pharm.D and apply my skills to improve healthcare in my community.

Grace Wheeler [wheele65@uwm.edu]
I am an undergraduate student at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and I am pursuing a degree in Biochemistry. I have loved science since high school and have been hooked ever since. I have always been interested in biology and chemistry and how it relates to drug discovery. I have the advantage of having a mother who works at a pharmaceutical company to learn more about the world of drug discovery. I hope in the future to attend graduate school and pursue a PhD in chemistry or Biochemistry. By joining the Arnold group, it has piqued my interest more and with working in the group I hope to gain skills that are needed to continue my path in this field.

Amy Reyes [amyreyes@uwm.edu]
I am an undergraduate student majoring in Biology and minoring in Chemistry. I added the Chemistry minor after taking an introductory course in Organic Chemistry - I was interested in organic synthesis and wanted to learn more about the field. I recently finished a research internship where I focused on synthesizing a plant-based sunscreen. That project introduced me to the world of drug discovery and brought me to the Arnold group. I am currently working on a drug for Triple Negative Breast Cancer. I am still exploring my options post-undergrad. I have not yet decided whether I want to attend Optometry school or pursue a PhD.

Molly Drosen [medrosen@uwm.edu]
I am an undergraduate student majoring in biochemistry. My love for chemistry and interest in pharmaceuticals are what brought me to Arnold group. As I have begun to make discoveries surrounding ME/CFS I have discovered my desire to work firsthand with patients. Thus, following graduation I plan to attend Physician Assistant school. Working with mouse models has been an amazing experience as they are very similar to humans in many ways. Thus, I am thankful for my time at Arnold group as it has also assisted me in my undergraduate learning of the human body systems.

As you may know already, that Dr. Pritchard wants to test the binding rates of different biomolecules interacting with HDL (high-density lipoprotein)using the Octet RED instrument, to test if the HDL is functional or dysfunctional and use it as a clinical assay if we are successful. So, I am learning to use the Octet-RED instrument it's kind of similar to using the Tecan plate reader in your lab. My current e-mail address is Tahniyathara@gmail.com
